Sclerotherapy: The Simple Solution For Patients Sick Of Unseemly Spider Veins

With a long history dating back to the 1930s, Sclerotherapy is considered one of the safest and most effective treatments for varicose veins, and the smaller version known as spider veins.

Varicose veins are a common condition caused by fragile or impaired vein walls and valves. This condition can be painful and cause various skin issues, including eczema. By minimising the veins, sclerotherapy greatly reduces the development of vein damage, making varicose veins less visually apparent and painful. In some cases, Sclerotherapy is also used to treat other conditions including malformed lymph vessels, haemorrhoids and hydroceles.

The procedure is minimally invasive, performed in a clinic and takes around 30-45 minutes to complete. Using a very fine needle, the practitioner injects a sclerosing solution (usually a salt solution) directly into the problematic vein. The solution then works to target the lining of the vessel, irritating it and causing it to swell and bind together. Over time, the vessel turns into scar tissue that gradually fades away.

The number of veins injected in one treatment is subject to the size and location of the vein, as well as the patient’s overall medical wellbeing. Depending on the size of the vein, patients can usually expect to see definitive results within three to six weeks. However, larger veins can take anywhere between three to four months. In some cases, multiple treatments may be required to achieve optimal patient results.

Due to the fine needle size used for Sclerotherapy, patients experience minimal discomfort or pain, and can carry on with normal activities directly after a treatment.
